Accelerando(accel.) : Gradually faster

Ad libitum(ad lib.) : At pleasure. The speed and manner of performance are left to performer

Adagio : Slow

Adagissimo : Very slow

Affrettando : Hurrying, pressing onwards

Agitato : Agitated

Alla Breve : Formerly stood for four minims in a bar, now more often indicates two minim beats.

Allargando : Getting slower, with an implication also of generally bigger tone.

Allegro : Lively, fast.

Allegretto : Rather lively (but less so than Allegro).

Andante : (lit. walking) At a moderate place.

Andantino : Alternatively slower or faster than Andante.

Animato : Animated.

A piacere : At pleasure.

Appassionato : Passionately.

Arco : A direction to string players to resume the use of the bow after a passage of pizzicato.

A Tempo : In time, i.e. resuming normal speed after deviation.

Attaca : Go on at once.

A Due, A 2 : For 2 performers or instruments(in orchestral or band music, it means that a part is to be played in unisonn by 2 instruments)

Affettuoso : Tenderly.

Amabile : Amiable, pleasant.

Amore : Love.

Amoroso : Loving.

A Piacere : At pleasure, meaning that the performer is not bound to follow the given rhythm exactly.

Breve : (lit. short). Orginally a note of relatively short duration, but now the longest note, equal to four minims.

Brillante : Brillant.

Brio : Vigour.
